you cannot change your life

The following article was written to inmates in the Creek County Jail in Oklahoma in 1996

Someone in jail was telling me not long ago that as soon as he were able to get his life straightened out, he was going to become a Christian.

Of course, if he could get his life straightened out by himself, he wouldn't be in jail right now.

People can't seem to realize that, though. If you could do it -- anything at all -- by yourself, you wouldn't need Jesus.

If you could change your own life, make your own right decisions, chart a good course for yourself, you wouldn't be behind bars.

You can't do it. You tried and here you are. You've failed.

So what do you do? You have to admit that you can't do it. You have to admit your defeat and ask Jesus into your heart to change your heart for you. He, on the other hand, can do it and by himself, too.

The Bible says that God alone knows the heart, and that he alone can move the heart to the right place (Jeremiah 17:9).

The Bible also tells us that when we ourselves try to move our own hearts in the right direction, we end up as wretched men, people that are miserable (Romans 7).

Let him in to change you and move you to a better place. In him alone is real freedom.

You are welcome to say anything you want as long as it is nice. If I don't like it, or it is ugly, I will take it off, place it into the garbage disposal, grind it up, and allow it to be flushed into the Gulf of Mexico where it will be eaten by a fish and then excreted where it will lie on the bottom of the ocean until it is covered up by other comments.
